The Next Big Thing: 2021 Emerging Writers’ Festival Edition

After a turbulent year, we’ll blow away the literary cobwebs together with The Wheeler Centre. Join us to hear readings from some of Australia’s best emerging literary voices, including 2020 Next Chapter recipient Sam Elkin, author of Emotional Female Yumiko Kadota, Voiceworks contributor Mickhaella Ermita, and multidisciplinary artist, performer and speaker Esther Tuddenham.

Sam Elkin

Sam Elkin is a trans masculine writer and radio maker living on unceded Wurundjeri land. Sam has been a Wheeler Centre Next Chapter fellow, and his essays have been published in the Griffith Review, Overland, Kill Your Darlings and Bent Street.

Mickhaella Ermita

Mickhaella Ermita (she/her) is a Filipino-New Zealander creative non-fiction writer, performer and Honours student at the University of Melbourne, where she is Women’s Officer for 2021.

Yumiko Kadota

Yumiko Kadota is a medical doctor in Sydney and debut author. Her memoir, Emotional Female, details the challenges women (of colour) face in the public health system, particularly in the male dominated field of Surgery.

Lauren Taylor

Lauren is the Wheeler Centre’s Programme Producer. She has worked extensively across Melbourne’s arts and cultural sector as a creative producer, programmer, broadcaster, podcaster, facilitator and media maker with organisations including Triple R, Monash University Performing Arts Centres, MPavilion, Noisy Ritual and ABC Radio.
